Our problems seem very similar - I understand what you are trying to do with the other membrane switch. I could do that as well but want to try to get the center membrane working or replaced -- I'm redrawing the ground circuit on it thinking maybe the rust compromised it (but I doubt it will work).

Let me know if you find the center membrane (where I can buy one too) or anything else you find -- I'll do the same.
